Melissa J. Cunningham
Melissa Cunningham, an associate, joined Carney Badley Spellman in 2013. Ms. Cunningham's practice focuses on health law, insurance regulation, and related transactions and litigation. She advises payors, providers and other entities on issues relating to HIPAA, the Affordable Care Act, Medicare and Medicaid regulations, and other state and federal regulations.

Ms. Cunningham earned her law degree from the University of Washington, where she completed the Health Law Concentration Track, taking courses in medical malpractice, healthcare fraud and abuse, and healthcare compliance.

During her third year of law school, Ms. Cunningham interned with the Office of General Counsel for the Department of Health and Human Services, where she defended the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Indian Health Service in administrative appeals. Throughout law school Ms. Cunningham also completed externships with the Employment Section of the Seattle City Attorney's where she assisted with employee disciplinary hearings, and the Civil Division of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, where she helped defend the county against civil claims.

In January 2016 Melissa was appointed by Washington Governor Jay Inslee to serve on the governing board of the Washington Health Benefit Exchange, a state marketplace for individuals, families and small businesses to find, compare and enroll in Qualified Health Plans and Washington Apple Health (Medicaid). Her term runs to December 14, 2017.
